Local Government

The Local Government Service Group is made up of UNISON members who have been elected by their fellow members.  They meet regularly to discuss the issues that are important within Local Government and work together to plan and co-ordinate UNISON's response.

The group covers all members employed within Local Government, as well as schools, fire and rescue services and those employed within private companies to provide public services.

UNISON is the largest union in the country representing Local Government workers.  Our members provide vital services to communities throughout the country and their hard work and dedication to their jobs means that communities are able to rely on them to provide the support they need.

The recent announcements by the Government has now put in jeopardy the future of these vital services following the Comprehensive Spending Review.  Councils throughout the South West are seeing huge cuts to their budgets as a result.

UNISON will not stand by and watch as the Government and Councils dismantle the social fabric of this country.  Our members know how much their communities rely on the services they provide and how much of an impact removing such services will have.  They recognise that it was neither their communities, nor their colleagues, that created the financial crisis that the Government uses to justify such actions.  They know that it was the wreckless behaviour of a handful of bankers and financial institutions that are to blame.

That is why they, along with their fellow trade union members, continue to campaign against these cuts.  UNISON's Million Voices campaign is there to expose the myths about these cuts and to provide the alternatives that would ensure those responsible for it are the ones who pay.

Dear SW SGE,

Thank you for your letter.

I absolutely agree with you that activists and members should have the necessary time to consider the outcome of what have been painstaking negotiations, in which we have tried to secure the best possible outcome for members.

I can assure you that I will be seeking to secure agreement to a reasonable period for consideration of the results of the negotiations before the ballot of members takes place.

Best wishes,

Heather
