UNISON South West Health and Safety Committee
The Health and Safety Committee is a subcommittee of the South West Regional Committee. Members are elected annually at the Annual Meeting of the South West Regional Council. The Committee consists of six members elected from branches, one member elected from the South West Committee, one member from each of the four regional Self Organised Groups and in the event that there are any service groups that are not represented they may elect a representative on to the Committee.
The Committee meets three times a year and arranges an annual forum for Health and Safety Representatives which usually takes place in April in Taunton. This event provides an opportunity for Health and Safety Representatives to take part in workshops to focus on key current issues for safety in the workplace. It is important for all Health and Safety Representatives to maintain and develop their knowledge and the Forum provides an excellent opportunity to achieve this.

Thoughts from the Health and Safety Committee Chair, Alan Hart, on the 2011 Forum:
Our new venue, Lyngford House, proved highly successful!
Responses from the delegates was very positive, especially one old lag who reported himself revitalised at the end of the day. That may have been a sugar rush given the number of cakes that he had eaten! The success was due to lots of hard work by the regional staff, whose hardest job was to organise myself, the staff at Lyngford House and members of the committee, a special mention to Caroline Templer, who eventually found us after cycling around most of Taunton. Our thanks to excellent speakers, which gave us a well balanced panel when it came to questions and, most of all, our thanks to the delegates who I look forward to seeing next year plus some new faces.
Advance warning - the date for the 2012 Forum is 25 April 2012
A little bit more about the committee:
We have worked with Thompsons Solicitors over the last couple of years to deliver a handbook for Health and Safety Representatives, provide workshops for branches and raise awareness among UNISON members of the free legal advice they are entitled to for personal injuries. If your branch would like more information about how to access this support please contact one of the committee or the Exeter regional office on: 01392442650 for more information.
Members of the Committee represent the region at a number of national Health and Safety conferences and seminars. Look out for updates and reports that will appear here on the UNISON South West website in future.
The Health and Safety Committee are keen to hear from any UNISON Health and Safety Representatives that would like to suggest topics for future articles or who would like to contribute articles about their experiences, events and success stories.
