Education and training committee
Trade Unions were born out of campaigns to improve the lives of working people - in the workplace, but also in education, welfare and healthcare. UNISON and its partner unions have been active from the very start.
The theme for this year's education programme and calendar is "Worth Defending" which mirrors the title of a new workshop we running on the Welfare State which in turn is part of a wider series of political and economic education and training. This new initative not only celebrates Public Services and the Welfare State but very clearly challenges many of the myths which are "mainstream". The workshops are backed up by three wall charts - Boom, Bust, Fight Back (a short history of boom, crisis and public spending); Worth Defending! (a short history of the Welfare State) and a wall chart celebrating Women's History which is being produced as I write.
The calendar captures both archive and current photographs showing our members defending the Welfare State and our Public Services. The final photos show members in our Region making history on 30th November 2011.
In the words of our General Secretary ....."Our members work ever day of every year to provide services our communities rely on. many work behind the scenes in schools, hospitals, town halls, libraries and a thousand other workplaces unseen by the media and politicians."
"But today they made their presence felt and their voices heard throughout the UK."
Please remember the 2012 programme is online and will be updated on a regular basis, this allows UNISON education to be more flexible, current and responsive to our branches needs. Please check the regional education page http://www.unisonsouthwest.org.uk/get-involved/education-training.ashx and the education website www.1in25.co.uk regularly to seethe courses on offer.
Warm wishes
